01 · The problem

The problem

I wanted somewhere calm to write notes and working documents. The editors I tried were either bare text boxes with no care in the design, or heavy tools loaded with panels and plugins I didn't need. I wanted something in between: minimal, but made with care.

02 · What I built

What I built

Slate is a desktop markdown editor that renders as you type, so the page looks finished while you're still writing. Everything is reachable from the keyboard, and the interface stays out of the way until you need it.

Hybrid editingMarkdown renders inline as you write, so there's no split preview pane competing for attention.
Keyboard firstCommon actions never require reaching for the mouse, which keeps you in the flow of writing.
Style as a featureA deliberate dark theme and careful typography. A tool you enjoy looking at is a tool you keep using.

The result

Slate is my editor for notes and working documents outside my day job, and it's open source on GitHub. It's also the clearest example of how I approach design: decide what to leave out, then make what's left feel right.
